Install the desktop app

Install Hule as an app when you want:

  • Hule in its own window;
  • an icon in the Dock or taskbar;
  • system notifications.

On a computer, install the web app from your browser. On a phone, Hule runs in the browser with a mobile layout made for the small screen.

Web app from your browser

  1. Open app.hule-do.com and sign in. Your workspaces open.

  2. Use your browser's own install command, for example the install icon at the right end of the address bar in Chrome or Edge, or Add to Dock in Safari on a Mac. A Hule icon appears with your apps.

    The Chrome address bar on app.hule-do.com with the install icon at its right end

    No install button in Hule

    Hule has no install button of its own; the browser installs it.

  3. Open Hule from where your system put it. Hule opens in its own window.

When a new version is out, the message "A new version is ready" appears; click Reload.

Hule Do desktop app

No public download of Hule Do yet

The Hule Do desktop app is not publicly downloadable yet. Until downloads open, use the web app from your browser.

These steps apply once you have the installer:

  • a .dmg for macOS;
  • a setup .exe for Windows;
  • an AppImage or a .deb for Linux.
  1. Install it:

    • macOS: open the .dmg and drag Hule Do to Applications;
    • Windows: run the setup file; it installs and opens the app;
    • Linux: install the .deb with your package manager, or make the AppImage executable and run it.

    Hule Do is now with your apps.

  2. Open Hule Do. On the first launch, macOS stops it, and Windows may too: the app is not signed by Apple or Microsoft.

  3. Allow the first launch:

    • macOS 15 and later, first: macOS says it can't verify Hule Do; click Done.
    • macOS 15 and later, then: in System Settings → Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway next to Hule Do and confirm in the dialog.
    • macOS 14 and earlier: in Applications, right-click Hule Do, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog.
    • Windows: if you see "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.

    Hule Do opens on the sign-in screen.

  4. Sign in. For Google, Telegram or another sign-in service, the app opens your browser and then returns you to the app. Your workspaces open in the Hule Do window.

    Sign-in doesn't come back to the app?

    The app waits three minutes for the browser. Click the sign-in button in the app again and finish in the browser within three minutes.

Closing the window doesn't quit

Hule keeps running in the tray (the menu bar on macOS), so notifications keep arriving. The tray menu has Open Hule Do and Quit.

Desktop app updates

The app checks for updates after you sign in and every four hours, and downloads them in the background. When the message "… ready — restart to apply" appears, click it to restart.

To check by hand:

  1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose User settings (see Manage your account). User settings opens.
  2. Open Updates.
  3. Click Check for updates. The line next to the button reads "Up to date." or "Downloading v… in the background…".

Faster on macOS

Check for updates… is also in the app menu.

Linux .deb: the update asks for your password

A .deb install asks for your admin password to update. If you see "Update not installed", click the update message again and enter your password.

Phone browser

Hule switches to its mobile layout when the window is narrower than 768 pixels.

Most tablets are 768 pixels wide or more, so they keep the full layout; an iPad mini held upright gets the mobile one.

  1. Open app.hule-do.com in your phone's browser. Hule switches to its mobile layout.
  2. To have it on the home screen, use the browser's Add to Home Screen. A Hule icon appears on the home screen.

iPhone and iPad: pop-ups need the home-screen icon

Notifications work only in Hule opened from the home screen. The mobile layout has no notification settings: they need a screen 768 pixels wide or more.

The bar at the bottom of the screen switches between:

A task opens full screen over the list; its properties, comments and subtasks open in sheets from the bottom of the screen.

Some view types and pages open on a big screen only; see Views on mobile.

No store apps

There are no Hule apps in the App Store or Google Play.

One account on three devices

Boris uses Hule in three places:

  • Hule Do on his Windows laptop at work;
  • the web app installed from Chrome on his Mac at home;
  • Hule from the home screen of his iPhone.

He signs in to each with the same account and sees the same workspaces. Notification settings are shared too, because they belong to his membership in each workspace, not to the device (see Set up notifications). He still allows pop-ups once on each device.

If it doesn't work

  • macOS or Windows blocks the first launch. The app is not signed by Apple or Microsoft; allow it as in step 3 of Hule Do desktop app.
  • "Update not installed". On Linux with a .deb, click the update message again and enter your password.
  • Sign-in doesn't come back to the app. The app waits three minutes for the browser. Click the sign-in button in the app again and finish in the browser within three minutes.
  • The screen says "No internet connection". Hule needs a connection; it reconnects by itself when the network is back, or click Try again.
  • "This build has to be updated manually" on Linux. This copy can't update itself: it is not an AppImage, or it is a .deb on a system without pkexec or apt-get. Install the new version the way you installed this one.
  • No pop-ups on an iPad or iPhone. Add Hule to the home screen and open it from there. In notification settings, switch Desktop pop-ups off and on, then tap Allow. An iPhone reaches these settings only in landscape; one with a Home button is too narrow even then.
