Comment and mention people

Comment on a task to keep the discussion next to the work, such as a question or a decision. Type @ and a name to bring a member in — they get a notification — and # to point to another task.

Before you start

To comment, you need the list's Comments feature and Read access to the list (Share a folder or a list).

Turn on Comments in the list

If a task has no Comments tab, the list has Comments off. Turn it on in the list's Configure → Features; see Set up a list.

Comment on a task

Read access is enough

You need Read access to the list and a permission set that allows comments; the Worker set does. You don't need Edit access to comment, react or mention someone in a comment.

  1. Open the task and select the Comments tab in the panel on the right. The task's comments show, with Write a comment… under them.

  2. Click Write a comment…, or press C while the task is open (see Keyboard shortcuts). The cursor moves into the editor under the comments.

  3. Type your comment. The text appears in the editor.

    Insert tables and checklists

The editor is the same as in the description: type / to insert a block such as a table or a checklist (see Editor blocks).

  4. Optional: to attach files, drop them on the editor or click Attach file. The file appears in your comment.

  5. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Enter or click Send comment (the arrow button under the box). The comment appears at the bottom and the task's watchers are notified. You now watch the task too, so you hear about the replies.

    Comment or file not sent?

"Failed to send the comment": check your connection and send it again. "Some attachments couldn’t be uploaded and weren’t sent": the comment went without them; click Edit comment on it and attach the file again.

Mention a member

Edit access for the description

A mention in a comment needs only what commenting needs. A mention in the task's description needs Edit access, like any change to the description.

  1. In a comment or the task's description, type @ and the first letters of a name. A list of people appears.

The person isn't in the list?

You can mention only members who can open the task's list. Share the list or its folder with them, then mention them again.

  2. Pick the person. Their name appears as a mention.

  3. Send the comment. The mention appears in the sent comment. (In the description there is nothing to send: the mention saves as you type.)

The person you mention:

  • sees "You were mentioned" in a pop-up, if they have Desktop pop-ups on;
  • gets a "… mentioned you in …" row in their Inbox under Mentions & replies, with a line quoted from your text;
  • starts watching the task.

If they turned off Mentioned me in their notification settings, they only start watching the task. A mention of yourself sends you nothing; the comment still notifies the task's other watchers.

For example, in the task Prepare release notes you send:

text
@Kate can you check the screenshots before Friday? The draft is in #Write the 2.4 changelog.

Kate is notified and starts watching the task; the changelog task becomes a clickable link.

  1. Type # and part of the task's title or its Task ID. A list of tasks appears.
  2. Pick the task. It appears as a link that opens it.
  3. Send the comment. The task link appears in the sent comment.

A # mention adds a relation

Hule also adds a relation between the two tasks, of the type mentions / is mentioned in, and removes it when you remove the mention. For relations you add yourself, see Link related tasks.

On a touch screen, Add reaction stays on the comment; to edit or delete, tap Comment actions (⋯) first.

Deleting a comment can't be undone

The comment is removed for everyone and can't be restored.

Mentions added while editing notify nobody

A mention you add while editing an existing comment doesn't notify anyone. To bring someone in, mention them in a new comment.

If it doesn't work

  • There is no Comments tab. The list has Comments off, or your permission set doesn't include reading comments. Ask the list's manager or an admin; see Set up a list and Permissions and access.
  • The person doesn't appear after @. They can't open the task's list. Share the list or its folder with them, then mention them again.
  • "Failed to send the comment". Check your connection and send it again.
  • "Some attachments couldn’t be uploaded and weren’t sent". The comment was sent without them. Click Edit comment on it and attach the file again.
  • "The attachment couldn’t be uploaded. Remove it or try again." Nothing was sent. Remove the file from the editor or drop it again, then send.
  • Someone you mentioned wasn't notified. You added the mention while editing a comment, or they turned off Mentioned me in Set up notifications. Mention them in a new comment, or ask them to turn Mentioned me on.
