# Task fields

This page lists every field a task can have, what it holds, and which list feature controls it.
Hule has no custom fields: a task can have only the fields below, and each
[list](/concepts/hule-model) chooses which of the optional ones its tasks show.

## Always-on fields

These fields can't be turned off.

| Field | What it holds | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| **Title** | The name of the task | [Create a task](/guides/create-and-edit-tasks#create-a-task) |
| **Description** | Rich text: headings, lists, checklists, tables, code, images and files; every block is in [Editor blocks](/reference/editor-blocks) | [Write a task description](/guides/write-a-task-description) |
| **List** | The one list the task lives in. Moving the task changes it | [Task menu](/guides/create-and-edit-tasks#task-menu-duplicate-move-delete) |
| **Status** | A status from the list's [status template](/concepts/statuses). Each status belongs to a [stage](/concepts/statuses): **Not started**, **Active** or **Done** | [Change statuses](/guides/set-up-a-list#change-statuses) |
| **Date** — Due | When the task is due: a day, or a day and a time | [Task dates](/guides/plan-on-timeline-and-calendar#task-dates-start-due-and-time) |
| **Created**, **Updated**, **Completed** | Who created or last changed the task and when; when it moved into a **Done** status. Shown in the task, set by Hule | [Read a task's history](/guides/see-task-history#read-a-task-s-history) |

## Optional fields and sections

A list turns these on or off in its **Configure** → **Features**
([Turn features on or off](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off)), or in the
**Features** step when you create the list.

::: warning Configure needs Edit access
**Configure** is in the list's menu only if you have **Edit** access to the list; see
[Permissions and access](/reference/permissions-and-access).
:::

Which features a new list has depends on how it was made:

| How the list was made | Features it starts with |
|---|---|
| Created in the app (the **Features** step of the [list form](/guides/organize-folders-and-lists#create-a-list)) | **Simple list** ([Feature presets](#feature-presets)) |
| Imported ([Import from another tool](/guides/import-from-another-tool)) | All 14 |
| In a duplicated folder ([Duplicate a folder](/guides/organize-folders-and-lists#duplicate-a-folder)) | All 14 |
| Created through the API (`POST /workspaces/:workspaceId/lists`, or from a list or folder template) without a `features` object, or made before list features existed | All 14 |

| Field or section | What it holds | Feature | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Date** — Start | When work on the task begins: a day, or a day and a time | **Start Date** | [Task dates](/guides/plan-on-timeline-and-calendar#task-dates-start-due-and-time) |
| **Repeats** | The schedule that brings the task back; rules in [Repeat rules](/reference/repeat-rules) | **Repeats** | [Set up a recurring task](/guides/set-up-recurring-tasks) |
| **Priority** | **None**, **Low**, **Normal**, **High** or **Urgent** | **Priority** | [Edit an open task](/guides/create-and-edit-tasks#edit-an-open-task) |
| **Tags** | Colored labels from the list's own tags and the [tag sets](/guides/tag-tasks#share-tags-between-lists-with-a-tag-set) it connects | **Tags** | [Tag tasks](/guides/tag-tasks) |
| **Assignee** | The one member responsible for the task | **Assignee** | [Assign a task](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks#assign-a-task) |
| **Watchers** | Members notified about the task's changes | **Watchers** | [Watch a task](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks#watch-a-task) |
| Task ID | The list's key for the task, such as `BT-42`, from its task series; see [Task IDs](/reference/task-ids) | **Task Number** | [Task ID prefix and numbering](/guides/set-up-a-list#task-id-prefix-and-numbering) |
| **Story points** | An effort estimate from the list's scale. The default scale is 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 | **Story Points** | [Estimate with Scrum Poker](/guides/estimate-with-scrum-poker) |
| **Time tracking** | The estimate and the time logged, in the form `2w 4d 6h 45m`. Logs are on the **Time logs** tab | **Time Tracking** | [Track time on a task](/guides/track-time) |
| Timer | A start and stop control in the time row that logs what it counts. Needs **Time Tracking** on | **Timer** | [Run a timer](/guides/track-time#run-a-timer) |
| **Relations** | Typed links to other tasks, such as **blocks** or **relates to** | **Relations** | [Link related tasks](/guides/link-related-tasks) |
| **Activity** | The history of the task's changes | **Activity** | [See what changed in a task](/guides/see-task-history) |
| **Comments** | The discussion on the task | **Comments** | [Comment and mention people](/guides/comment-and-mention) |
| **Subtasks** | Tasks under this task, in the same list, and the done/total counter | **Subtasks** | [Break a task down with subtasks](/guides/break-down-with-subtasks) |

## Turned off: hidden, not deleted

Turning a feature off hides it from the list's tasks and views but keeps the data: turn it back
on and the values return. Some features keep working while hidden:

| Feature off | What still happens |
|---|---|
| **Start Date** | [Timeline and Calendar](/guides/plan-on-timeline-and-calendar) views still use the start dates |
| **Repeats** | Series already set up keep creating tasks |
| **Watchers** | Current watchers are still notified |
| **Task Number** | Keys are still issued, only hidden. A list without a task series issues none |
| **Story Points** | Scrum Poker skips the list's tasks |
| **Activity** | Changes are still recorded |

For example, switch **Repeats** off on a list with a weekly task: the **Repeats** field leaves the
task card, and next week's task still arrives. Stop the series itself in
[Pause, skip or stop a series](/guides/set-up-recurring-tasks#pause-skip-or-stop-a-series).

## Feature presets

The **Features** pane offers three ready-made sets. A preset replaces the whole set at once;
after that you can switch single features on or off.

| Preset | Features on | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| **Simple list** | **Start Date**, **Priority**, **Tags**, **Task Number**, **Relations**, **Comments**, **Subtasks** | [Turn features on or off](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off) |
| **Teamwork** | Everything except **Repeats** and **Story Points** | [Turn features on or off](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off) |
| **Scrum** | All 14 features | [Turn features on or off](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off) |

For example, picking **Teamwork** on a list that uses **Repeats** turns **Repeats** off.

## Field layout in the task card

**Configure** → **Fields** sets where nine fields sit in the task card:

* **Status**, **Assignee**, **Date**;
* **Repeats**, **Priority**, **Time tracking**;
* **Story points**, **Tags**, **Watchers**.

Drag a field to move it, or drag its bottom-right corner to stretch it; **Reset layout** restores
the default. The layout is the same for every task in the list, and a field turned off in
**Features** shows there as **Turned off in Features**.
