  Set up a workspace for a small team: a folder for your project, a team list,
  members, sharing and a first assigned task.
---

# Start Hule with your team

In about 15 minutes, plus the time your team takes to accept the invitation, you will have a
[workspace](/concepts/hule-model) your team works in:

* a **Product** [folder](/concepts/hierarchy) with a **Roadmap** [list](/concepts/hule-model);
* two [members](/guides/invite-members-and-grant-permissions) who can [see it](/concepts/sharing);
* a first task [assigned](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks) to one of them, with a
  [comment](/guides/comment-and-mention) that brings them in.

![Hule with the team set up: the sidebar shows the workspace Acme, its folder Product and the list Roadmap; the task Draft the Q3 roadmap is due Friday and carries Kate's avatar](/shots/get-started/team-result.light.webp){.light-only}
![Hule with the team set up: the sidebar shows the workspace Acme, its folder Product and the list Roadmap; the task Draft the Q3 roadmap is due Friday and carries Kate's avatar](/shots/get-started/team-result.dark.webp){.dark-only}

## What you need

* A Hule account. When you sign up, Hule creates a workspace for you, named after you — for
  example "Alex Morgan's workspace". You are its **owner**, so you can do every step below
  ([Permissions and access](/reference/permissions-and-access)).
* The email addresses of one or two people on your team.

## Name the workspace after your team

1. In the sidebar, under **Workspaces**, point at your workspace and click **⋯** (**More
   actions**).
   A menu opens.

   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the More actions menu of Alex Morgan's workspace is open, with Rename at the bottom](/shots/get-started/team-1.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the More actions menu of Alex Morgan's workspace is open, with Rename at the bottom](/shots/get-started/team-1.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. Choose **Rename**.
   The name becomes editable.

   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the workspace name is an editable field, ready for the new name](/shots/get-started/team-2.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the workspace name is an editable field, ready for the new name](/shots/get-started/team-2.dark.webp){.dark-only}

3. Type your team's name — here, **Acme** — and press `Enter`.
   The sidebar shows the new name.

   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the workspace is now called Acme](/shots/get-started/team-3.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar, Workspaces section: the workspace is now called Acme](/shots/get-started/team-3.dark.webp){.dark-only}

## Add the Product folder

A [folder](/concepts/hierarchy) holds the lists of one area of work.

::: info Folders nest
You can put folders inside folders later.
:::

1. Point at **Acme**, click **+** (**Add**) and choose **New folder**.
   An empty row with **Folder name** appears.

   ![Sidebar: under Acme, an empty row with the Folder name field, opened from the plus button on the workspace row](/shots/get-started/team-4.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar: under Acme, an empty row with the Folder name field, opened from the plus button on the workspace row](/shots/get-started/team-4.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. Type **Product** and press `Enter`.
   **Product** appears under **Acme**.

   ![Sidebar: the folder Product under the workspace Acme](/shots/get-started/team-5.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar: the folder Product under the workspace Acme](/shots/get-started/team-5.dark.webp){.dark-only}

## Create the Roadmap list

1. Point at **Product**, click **+** and choose **New list**.
   A form opens and asks **About the list**.

   ![New list form on its first step, About the list: empty Name, location Product, Status Template Simple, and the Next button](/shots/get-started/team-6.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New list form on its first step, About the list: empty Name, location Product, Status Template Simple, and the Next button](/shots/get-started/team-6.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. In **Name**, type **Roadmap**.
   The name shows in the field.

3. Leave **Status Template** ([statuses](/concepts/statuses)) on **Simple**. Its statuses are:
   * **To Do**
   * **In Progress**
   * **Done**

4. Click **Next**.
   The form asks **What do its tasks need?**

   ![New list form, step What do its tasks need?, for the list Roadmap: the Presets row with Simple list selected, 7 of 14 features on](/shots/get-started/team-7.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New list form, step What do its tasks need?, for the list Roadmap: the Presets row with Simple list selected, 7 of 14 features on](/shots/get-started/team-7.dark.webp){.dark-only}

5. Under **Presets** ([list features](/guides/set-up-a-list)), choose **Teamwork**.
   **Teamwork** turns on 12 of the 14 features, among them **Assignee** and **Watchers**
   ([Assign and watch tasks](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks)).

   ![New list form, step What do its tasks need?: the Teamwork preset selected, 12 of 14 features on, Assignee and Watchers among them, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/team-8.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New list form, step What do its tasks need?: the Teamwork preset selected, 12 of 14 features on, Assignee and Watchers among them, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/team-8.dark.webp){.dark-only}

   ::: warning Pick Teamwork, not Simple list
   The default **Simple list** has no **Assignee** field, so you could not assign the task later.
   :::

6. Click **Create**.
   The form closes and **Roadmap** opens in its [**List** view](/concepts/views), under **Product** in
   the sidebar.

   ![The empty list Roadmap open in its List view: No tasks yet with a New task button, and Roadmap under Product in the sidebar](/shots/get-started/team-9.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The empty list Roadmap open in its List view: No tasks yet with a New task button, and Roadmap under Product in the sidebar](/shots/get-started/team-9.dark.webp){.dark-only}

More list options are in [Set up a list](/guides/set-up-a-list).

## Write the first task

1. In the empty list, click **New task**.
   The **New Task** form opens, with **Roadmap** already chosen as the list.

   ![New Task form opened from the empty list: the Title field is empty and the List field is already set to Roadmap](/shots/get-started/team-10.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New Task form opened from the empty list: the Title field is empty and the List field is already set to Roadmap](/shots/get-started/team-10.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. In **Title**, type **Draft the Q3 roadmap** and click **Create**.
   The task appears with the status **To Do**.

   ![The list Roadmap with its first task, Draft the Q3 roadmap, and the To Do status mark at the start of its row](/shots/get-started/team-11.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The list Roadmap with its first task, Draft the Q3 roadmap, and the To Do status mark at the start of its row](/shots/get-started/team-11.dark.webp){.dark-only}

Add two or three more, so your team has something to see: once the list has a task, the
**Add a task, press Enter** row at its top adds the next one.

## Invite team members

1. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar.
   A menu opens.

   ![The menu under your name at the bottom of the sidebar, open, with Workspace settings in it](/shots/get-started/team-12.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The menu under your name at the bottom of the sidebar, open, with Workspace settings in it](/shots/get-started/team-12.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. Choose **Workspace settings**. If you belong to several workspaces, pick **Acme** in the
   submenu.
   The settings open.

   ![Workspace settings of Acme just opened, with Members in the settings menu on the left](/shots/get-started/team-13.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Workspace settings of Acme just opened, with Members in the settings menu on the left](/shots/get-started/team-13.dark.webp){.dark-only}

3. Open **Members**.
   The **Members** page opens.

5. Type the person's **Email**.
   A **Name** field appears.

   ![Invite people form with kate.lee@example.com typed in Email, the Name field that appeared under it, and the Send invite button](/shots/get-started/team-16.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Invite people form with kate.lee@example.com typed in Email, the Name field that appeared under it, and the Send invite button](/shots/get-started/team-16.dark.webp){.dark-only}

6. In **Name**, type the name the team will see — here, **Kate**.
   **Send invite** becomes available.

7. Click **Send invite**.
   The message "Invitation sent to …" appears, and Kate is listed under **Invited**.

   ![Members page after the invite: Kate is listed under Invited, and the message Invitation sent to kate.lee@example.com is in the corner](/shots/get-started/team-17.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Members page after the invite: Kate is listed under Invited, and the message Invitation sent to kate.lee@example.com is in the corner](/shots/get-started/team-17.dark.webp){.dark-only}

8. Invite a second member the same way.

Kate gets an email, or a notification if she already uses Hule, and accepts it. When she does,
she moves from **Invited** to **Members**, and you can
[share the folder](/guides/share-a-folder-or-list) with her. Details:
[Invite members and grant permissions](/guides/invite-members-and-grant-permissions).

::: info New members start as Workers
New members hold the **Worker** [permission set](/reference/permissions-and-access): they can edit
tasks in whatever is shared with them, and nothing is shared with them yet.
:::

## Share the folder with the team

1. Close the settings.
   The list **Roadmap** is back.

2. Point at **Product** in the sidebar and click **⋯** (**More actions**).
   The folder's menu opens.

   ![Sidebar: the More actions menu of the folder Product, open, with Share… in it](/shots/get-started/team-18.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Sidebar: the More actions menu of the folder Product, open, with Share… in it](/shots/get-started/team-18.dark.webp){.dark-only}

   ::: warning No Share… in the menu?
   Check that you are in your own workspace: only the owner, or members with the right
   [permission set](/reference/permissions-and-access), can share.
   :::

3. Choose **Share…**.
   The dialog "Share Folder "Product"" opens.

   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog with no shares yet: the Member picker, Read and Edit under Access, and the Add button](/shots/get-started/team-19.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog with no shares yet: the Member picker, Read and Edit under Access, and the Add button](/shots/get-started/team-19.dark.webp){.dark-only}

4. In **Member**, pick Kate.
   Her name fills the field.

   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog with the Member picker open: Kate and Boris are offered, each with their email address](/shots/get-started/team-19b.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog with the Member picker open: Kate and Boris are offered, each with their email address](/shots/get-started/team-19b.dark.webp){.dark-only}

   ::: warning Kate is not in the list?
   She has not accepted the invitation yet. Add more tasks to **Roadmap** while you wait, and come
   back once she is under **Members** in **Workspace settings**.
   :::

5. Under **Access**, choose **Edit**.
   **Edit** is selected.

   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog before adding: Member is Kate, Access is Edit, and the Add button is ready](/shots/get-started/team-20.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog before adding: Member is Kate, Access is Edit, and the Add button is ready](/shots/get-started/team-20.dark.webp){.dark-only}

6. Click **Add**.
   Kate appears in the list of people with access.

   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog after adding: Kate is listed with Edit access, provided by Alex Morgan](/shots/get-started/team-21.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Share Folder "Product" dialog after adding: Kate is listed with Edit access, provided by Alex Morgan](/shots/get-started/team-21.dark.webp){.dark-only}

7. Add your second member the same way.

Kate now sees:

* **Product**
* the **Roadmap** list
* every list you add to the folder later

Your other folders and lists stay hidden from her
([Sharing along the hierarchy](/concepts/sharing)). Details:
[Share a folder or a list](/guides/share-a-folder-or-list).

## Assign the task and mention Kate

1. Click **Draft the Q3 roadmap**.
   The task opens.

   ::: warning No Assignee field?
   The list was created with **Simple list**. Open the list's **⋯** → **Configure** → **Features**
   and turn on **Assignee** ([Set up a list](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off)).
   :::

5. Click **Write a comment…** on the right and type **@Ka**.

7. Finish the comment so it reads as below, and press `Cmd`/`Ctrl`+`Enter`:

   ```text
   @Kate here is the outline from our call
   ```

   The comment appears in **Comments**, above the box.

   ![The posted comment "@Kate here is the outline from our call" in Comments, with Kate's mention highlighted](/shots/get-started/team-27.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The posted comment "@Kate here is the outline from our call" in Comments, with Kate's mention highlighted](/shots/get-started/team-27.dark.webp){.dark-only}

Kate gets "Assigned to you" and "You were mentioned" in her
[**Inbox**](/guides/set-up-notifications#inbox-where-notifications-wait), and
[watches](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks) the task from now on, so she hears about its next
changes. Details: [Assign and watch tasks](/guides/assign-and-watch-tasks) and
[Comment and mention people](/guides/comment-and-mention).

## Live updates as Kate works

Hule shows your team's changes in real time: you don't refresh the page to see them. When Kate
opens **Draft the Q3 roadmap** and gets to work, you see:

* her reply under **Comments**, briefly highlighted;
* her changes to the task, such as a new status, in the open task and in **Roadmap**, briefly
  highlighted;
* a task she adds at the top of **Roadmap**, under **Recently updated**, until you click
  **Refresh** there;
* her avatar and "Kate is editing…" next to the description while she types in it; you can type
  in it at the same time ([Write a task description](/guides/write-a-task-description)).

It works the other way too: the **Product** folder appeared in Kate's sidebar the moment you
shared it, and a folder you stop sharing disappears from it without a reload. Your own changes
reach your other tabs and devices the same way. A [Scrum Poker](/guides/estimate-with-scrum-poker)
round and a [GTD session](/guides/run-a-gtd-session) also update live for everyone who has the
view open.

::: info Back after a lost connection
If your connection drops or the computer goes to sleep, Hule reconnects on its own and reloads
the open view and the sidebar, so changes made in the meantime show up.
:::

## Step problems and fixes

* **There is no Share… for the folder.** Check that you are in your own workspace: only the
  owner, or members with the right permission set, can share
  ([Permissions and access](/reference/permissions-and-access)).
* **Kate is not in the Member picker.** She has not accepted the invitation yet. Wait for her,
  or check under **Invited** in **Workspace settings** → **Members**
  ([Invite members and grant permissions](/guides/invite-members-and-grant-permissions)).
* **The task has no Assignee field.** The list was created with **Simple list**. Open the
  list's **⋯** → **Configure** → **Features** and turn on **Assignee**
  ([Set up a list](/guides/set-up-a-list#turn-features-on-or-off)).

## What you just learned

* A workspace holds folders, and folders hold lists — see [Folders inside folders](/concepts/hierarchy).
* A member sees only what you share with them, and sharing a folder covers everything inside
  it — see [Sharing along the hierarchy](/concepts/sharing).
* A list decides which fields its tasks have; a preset switches them on in one go — see
  [The Hule model](/concepts/hule-model).

## Where to go next

* [Invite members and grant permissions](/guides/invite-members-and-grant-permissions) — give a
  member more rights, such as building their own folders.
* [Set up notifications](/guides/set-up-notifications) — choose how your team hears about
  assignments and mentions.
* [Create an automation](/guides/create-an-automation) — let Hule do the routine steps.
