  Set up a personal GTD system in Hule: an Inbox list, lists to sort into, a GTD
  session that empties the Inbox list, and a Today view as your home page.
---

# Start with Hule on your own

In about fifteen minutes you will have a personal system that works like
[GTD](/concepts/gtd) (Getting Things Done):

* an [Inbox list](/guides/capture-to-inbox#inbox-list-setting) that catches every new task;
* a few lists where sorted tasks live;
* a [GTD session](/guides/run-a-gtd-session) that empties the **Inbox** list;
* a [home page](/guides/build-a-today-view#home-page-open-today-at-start) that shows what is due
  today.

![Hule with the personal view Today as the home page: the sidebar shows Personal/Home, Work/Admin and Inbox, Today sits under User Views, and the Today view is open with its two filter rules](/shots/get-started/solo-1.light.webp){.light-only}
![Hule with the personal view Today as the home page: the sidebar shows Personal/Home, Work/Admin and Inbox, Today sits under User Views, and the Today view is open with its two filter rules](/shots/get-started/solo-1.dark.webp){.dark-only}

## What you need

* **A browser.** Hule runs at [app.hule-do.com](https://app.hule-do.com).
* **An email address**, to confirm your account.

## 1. Create your account

1. Open [app.hule-do.com/register](https://app.hule-do.com/register).
   The **Create account** form opens.

   ![Create account form, still empty: the Email, Full name and Password fields and the Create account button](/shots/get-started/solo-1b.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Create account form, still empty: the Email, Full name and Password fields and the Create account button](/shots/get-started/solo-1b.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. Fill in the form and click **Create account**:

   * **Email**
   * **Full name**
   * **Password**, at least 8 characters

   Hule says **Check your email**.

   ![Create account card saying Check your email, with the address that was just registered](/shots/get-started/solo-2.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Create account card saying Check your email, with the address that was just registered](/shots/get-started/solo-2.dark.webp){.dark-only}

3. Open the email from Hule and click the confirmation link.
   Hule says **Email confirmed — welcome to Hule!**, and the Home page says **Your workspace is
   ready. Create your first list to get started.**

   ![Home page of a new account: Your workspace is ready. Create your first list to get started, the New list button, and Anna Smith's workspace in the sidebar](/shots/get-started/solo-3.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![Home page of a new account: Your workspace is ready. Create your first list to get started, the New list button, and Anna Smith's workspace in the sidebar](/shots/get-started/solo-3.dark.webp){.dark-only}

   ::: warning Link expired?
   If the confirmation page says "Invalid or expired verification link" and you already opened
   this link, your account exists: sign in at [app.hule-do.com/login](https://app.hule-do.com/login).
   If the link is more than an hour old, register again and open the newest email: each
   registration replaces the previous link.
   :::

Hule created one [workspace](/concepts/hule-model) for you, named after the full name you typed,
such as **Anna Smith's workspace**. It is empty: no lists, no tasks yet.

## 2. Inbox list for new tasks

Your Inbox list is an ordinary [list](/concepts/hule-model) where every new task lands before you
decide what it is. In this tutorial it is called **Inbox**.

1. On the Home page, click **New list**.
   The new list form opens on **Details**.

   ![New list form on its Details step, still empty: Name, Location, Status Template set to Simple, and the Next button](/shots/get-started/solo-4.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New list form on its Details step, still empty: Name, Location, Status Template set to Simple, and the Next button](/shots/get-started/solo-4.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. In **Name**, type **Inbox**.
   **Next** becomes available.

3. Leave **Location** empty and **Status Template** ([statuses](/concepts/statuses)) on **Simple**.

   ::: warning Location looks required
   Leave **Location** empty anyway: the list goes to the top of your workspace.
   :::

4. Click **Next**.
   The **Features** step opens with the **Simple list** preset
   ([list features](/guides/set-up-a-list)).

   ![New list form on its Features step: the Simple list preset selected, 7 of 14 features on, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/solo-4b.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New list form on its Features step: the Simple list preset selected, 7 of 14 features on, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/solo-4b.dark.webp){.dark-only}

5. Click **Create**.
   The **Inbox** list opens and appears in the sidebar under **Workspaces**.

   ![The new Inbox list, empty, with Inbox in the sidebar under the workspace and the New task button](/shots/get-started/solo-5.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The new Inbox list, empty, with Inbox in the sidebar under the workspace and the New task button](/shots/get-started/solo-5.dark.webp){.dark-only}

6. Open the menu at the bottom of the sidebar (your name) and choose **Workspace settings**.
   The settings open.

7. Under **Me in this workspace**, open **GTD**
   ([Inbox list setting](/guides/capture-to-inbox#inbox-list-setting)).
   The **GTD** page shows **Inbox list** set to **Not selected**.

8. In **Inbox list**, pick **Inbox**.
   The **New task** setting appears under it.

9. In **New task**, choose **Always**.
   From now on, the [**New Task** form](/guides/capture-to-inbox#new-task-form-in-the-app) opens
   on your **Inbox** list.

![Workspace settings, GTD page: Inbox list set to Inbox and New task set to Always](/shots/get-started/solo-6.light.webp){.light-only}
![Workspace settings, GTD page: Inbox list set to Inbox and New task set to Always](/shots/get-started/solo-6.dark.webp){.dark-only}

::: info Inbox list, not the Inbox page
The app's **Inbox** page holds your [notifications](/guides/set-up-notifications). Your Inbox
list is the list you just created and picked in **Workspace settings** → **GTD**.
:::

## 3. Add folders and lists

[Folders](/concepts/hierarchy) group lists and nest as deep as you like.

1. In the sidebar, point at your workspace row, click **+** and choose **New folder**.
   A **Folder name** field appears.

   ![The + menu open on the workspace row in the sidebar, with New folder, New list and New view](/shots/get-started/solo-7.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![The + menu open on the workspace row in the sidebar, with New folder, New list and New view](/shots/get-started/solo-7.dark.webp){.dark-only}

2. Type **Personal** and press `Enter`.
   The folder appears in the tree.

3. Point at **Personal**, click **+** and choose **New list**.
   The new list form opens with **Location** set to **Personal**.

4. In **Name**, type **Home**.
   **Next** becomes available.

5. Click **Next**.
   The **Features** step opens.

6. Click **Create**.
   **Home** appears inside **Personal**.

7. Create a second folder the same way (steps 1–6): the folder **Work** with the list **Admin**
   inside it.
   **Admin** appears inside **Work**.

Your tree now looks like this:

```text
Anna Smith's workspace
├── Personal
│   └── Home
├── Work
│   └── Admin
└── Inbox
```

![Sidebar tree of Anna Smith's workspace: the Personal folder with the Home list, the Work folder with the Admin list, and the Inbox list](/shots/get-started/solo-8.light.webp){.light-only}
![Sidebar tree of Anna Smith's workspace: the Personal folder with the Home list, the Work folder with the Admin list, and the Inbox list](/shots/get-started/solo-8.dark.webp){.dark-only}

::: info Sidebar order
By default the sidebar sorts by name and puts folders on top. Change it with **Sort sidebar**
([Organize folders and lists](/guides/organize-folders-and-lists)).
:::

## 4. Capture three tasks

1. Click **+** (**Create**) at the top of the sidebar and choose **New task**.
   The **New Task** form opens with **List** set to **Inbox**.

   ![New Task form with List set to Inbox, an empty Title and the Create & new button](/shots/get-started/solo-9.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New Task form with List set to Inbox, an empty Title and the Create & new button](/shots/get-started/solo-9.dark.webp){.dark-only}

   ::: warning List is not Inbox?
   Go back to **Workspace settings** → **GTD** and check that **New task** is **Always**.
   :::

2. In **Title**, type **Learn Spanish** and click **Create & new**.
   The task is created, and the form stays open for the next one.

3. Type **Draft the Q4 budget** and click **Create & new**.
   The form stays open again.

4. Type **Call the dentist** and click **Create**.
   Three tasks wait in **Inbox**, with **Call the dentist** first.

   ::: info New tasks go on top
   Each new task lands at the top of the list, so the last one you add comes first.
   :::

![The Inbox list with three tasks: Call the dentist, Draft the Q4 budget and Learn Spanish](/shots/get-started/solo-10.light.webp){.light-only}
![The Inbox list with three tasks: Call the dentist, Draft the Q4 budget and Learn Spanish](/shots/get-started/solo-10.dark.webp){.dark-only}

Later, you can capture from your phone with the [Telegram bot](/guides/add-tasks-from-telegram)
or ask [Claude](/guides/connect-an-ai-agent) to do it.

## 5. GTD view on the Inbox list

A [GTD session](/guides/run-a-gtd-session) hands you one task at a time and asks what it is. It
runs in a [view](/concepts/views) of the **GTD** [view type](/reference/views-compared).

1. In the sidebar, open the **More actions** menu (**…**) of **Inbox** and choose **New view**.
   The new view form opens.

2. In **Display Mode**, choose **GTD**.
   The **Icon** row switches to the GTD icon.

3. In **Name**, type **Clarify**.
   **Create** becomes available.

   ![New view form opened from the Inbox list: Display Mode GTD, Name Clarify, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/solo-11.light.webp){.light-only}
   ![New view form opened from the Inbox list: Display Mode GTD, Name Clarify, and the Create button](/shots/get-started/solo-11.dark.webp){.dark-only}

4. Click **Create**.
   The view shows your three tasks under **Up next**.

   ::: warning Start button greyed out?
   The view has no task waiting. Check that you opened **New view** from the **Inbox** list's
   menu, not from another list.
   :::

## 6. GTD session: empty the Inbox list

1. Choose **Yes, it's actionable**.
   Hule asks **What is the desired outcome?** with the task's title filled in.

   ![Guided GTD panel asking What is the desired outcome?, with Desired outcome filled with Call the dentist, an optional step field and the Continue button](/shots/get-started/solo-13.light.webp){.light-only}

   ::: info The two-minute rule
   In [GTD](/concepts/gtd), anything that takes under two minutes is done on the spot.
   :::

4. Make the call, then click **Done**.
   The task is closed, and the panel moves to **Draft the Q4 budget**.

5. Choose **Yes, it's actionable**.
   Hule asks **What is the desired outcome?**

## 7. Today view as your home page

A [personal view](/guides/build-a-today-view) can gather tasks from all your lists and open as
your home page.

1. Click **+** (**Create**) at the top of the sidebar and choose **New view**.
   The form asks **What view are you making?**

2. Fill in the form:

   * **Name**: **Today**
   * **Display Mode**: **List**
   * **Type**: keep **User**

   The form says **A personal view, visible only to you. It pulls tasks from the sources you pick
   below.**

3. In **Source**, pick your workspace.
   **Create** becomes available.

    A rule has no value yet. Pick one, or remove the empty rule.
    :::

13. In the sidebar, open the **More actions** menu (**…**) of **Today** and choose **Set as home**.
    Hule says **This view is now your home**. The **Home** button now opens it, as in the
    picture at the top of this page.

    ::: warning No Set as home?
    Only your own personal views can be your home page. If **Type** was not **User**, create the
    view again from **+** (**Create**) with **User** in **Type**.
    :::

On that Friday, **Draft the Q4 budget** shows up here by itself. More options:
